April in the garden
After a slow start to the Spring everything is now bursting into bloom. The
daffodils have all come out and all the spring bedding is in flower.
Whilst wallflowers are the main choice for us, being hardy and reliable, we also
plant many spring bulbs, forget me nots, pansies and violas. We always try out
different varieties and unusual colours.
This year we have used a fritillary called Fritillaria michailovskyi, this is a really
striking fritillary, with several bell-shaped flowers to each stem, these are dark
purple with a bright yellow band at the outer end of each petal. We have
planted it with violas, muscari and bellis for some interesting colour
combinations!
Our Camellias have now started flowering and we are lucky to have some
mature specimens. One of our favourites is the rare variety ‘Francie L’ which is
valued for very large, semi-double, rose pink flowers. It has long narrow
leaves, and is spectacular when in flower.
