October in the Garden
During October the spectacular autumn colours start, and continue until the end of November. Viburnums, Acers, and Hydrangea quercifolia are already richly coloured, whilst the branches of Malus ‘Golden Hornet' are weighted down with its bright yellow crab apples. Virginia Creeper and Boston Ivy are both bright red and yellow now, however the best climber for later autumn colour is the huge leaved Vitis Coignetiae , of which we have several mature specimens around the gardens.
The tender perennials will still be going strong right up until the first frost, However the gardens here at Lakeside Hotel enjoy the warming influence of the lake, so this may not be until December.
Later this month we will start the planting of around 5000 spring bulbs, we fill beds, borders and windowboxes will an array of daffodils, tulips, muscari, snowdrops, fritillaria and allium, So make sure you visit in the spring to see the result of all this work!
