September in the garden
This month sees a late burst of colour from late flowering hardy perennials. Old fashioned and invasive Montbretia has been superseded by some fantastic new varieties years and now have a good display. Other star performers are Sedum spectable, Japanese Anemones and Asters. All of these clump forming perennials we divide during the winter or spring, spread out and replant, to encourage them to increase as quickly as possible.
Many shrubs are still in full flower, Fuschia ‘Riccartonii' grows really well here, flowering from May to October. Potentilla ‘Goldfinger' also flowers for the same period, and looks really good next to Hydrangea ‘Grayswood'. All of these shrubs are easy from cuttings, especially the Fuschia, so just ask when you are next here if you would like a cutting!
