March in the Garden
Spring is definitely here now, with most daffodils now starting to bloom. Crocus, Snowdrops, Viburnum tinus, Forsythia and Camellias are flowering well. When the snowdrops are finished we lift, divide and replant them to increase our stock, they are always best divided when in leaf, or ‘in the green’. Herbaceous plants are also putting on growth now, which gives us an opportunity to divide them up too, creating new, or just larger clumps. Hostas, Iris sibirica, Geraniums, Sedum and Hemerocalis all respond well to this treatment.
We have just harvested our willow, and are about to start using the long stems for weaving. We use the willo to create unusual supports for annual summer climbers. The willow grows at the waters edge, and we cut it down completely this time every year, which promotes stems up to 4 metres high for the following years harvest. You will see the woven supports throughout the summer in many of our pots and containers.
