April in the Garden

April is a very busy month, herbaceous plants are well into growth and the spring bedding is all coming into flower. Wallflowers are the main choice for us as they are hardy and reliable. We grow some mixtures but generally we plant in single colour blocks, for more impact, and we choose tulip colours to complement each variety.

We have just hard-pruned shrubs such as the coloured stemmed dogwoods, buddleja davidii, Fuschia ‘Riccartonii’ and Cotinus (smoke bush). Pruning these shrubs is not essential but will produce a much healthier look and more vigorous plant. Our sweet peas have been sown now and will provide us with scented blooms all summer, this year we are growing several old varieties, and a few interesting newer ones too, if you have not planted yours yet, buy a packet of seed, sow and forget - you will be surprised how easy they are to grow.

On Wednesday 30th April we hold our garden open day for the National Gardens Scheme, to raise money for charity. Please do visit us, you will have the opportunity to chat to the garden team, have a look around the garden, enjoy a cup of tea and maybe get a cutting or two!
