May in the Garden
The longer days of May bring a rush of plant growth, and typical Lakeland blossoms of Rhododendrons and evergreen Azaleas all competing with each other with incredibly strong, and often, clashing colours. We especially like the ‘blue’ ones that seem to calm down the brighter colours.
Our favourite spring bedding plants, wallflowers, are in full flower with the tulips to compliment them. With warmer temperatures the fragrance of the wallflowers is much more apparent as higher temperatures increase the scent of any garden flower.
Some of our scented shrubs are now starting to bloom, we have many varieties of lilac, including the golden leaved form, and a variety that flowers on and off all summer. The garden team at Lakeside all agree though, that the best scented flowers this month are those of Euphorbia Mellifera, a hardy evergreen shrub from Madeira with amazing foliage and brown flowers that smell of honey!
