August in the Garden

It is easy to forget that many shrubs, trees and perennials are past their best by midsummer. At Lakeside Hotel we aim to have a garden where there is always something of interest to see.

At this time of year when we realise that the days are getting shorter once again its great to have plants that are bursting into flower. Kniphofias, or ʻRed Hot Pokersʼ used to be available in one standard colour, but now there are many different variations. We have obtained many new varieties from Claire Austin, the famous perennial plant specialist. During August they are at their best, however they continue for many months and some have evergreen grassy foliage too.

Hydrangeas are a great source of colour for midsummer to autumn, producing amazing flowers of blue or pink, depending on the pH of your soil, the flowers last for weeks and are great cut flowers too.

One of our favourite shrubs at Lakeside Hotel is the Calycanthus, or allspice bush. A rare but hardy shrub, looking similar to a magnolia but with reddish brown flowers that smell like apple and cinnamon danish pastries! With the amazing new extension to the conservatory this shrub will be moving in the autumn, so if you would like a cutting please let us know.
