November in the Garden
November at Lakeside is the peak month for Autumn colour, The surrounding native woodlands are a rich palette of yellows, oranges and browns. Whilst in the garden Japanese Maples, Viburnums, Hydrangeas and climbers such as Vitis coignetiae all have been putting on a spectacular display of colour. The Vitis is a climber with dinner plate sized leaves, green all summer then turning to shades of red and purple in Autumn. Interestingly this is a better climber to grow than Virginia Creeper as it retains its foliage for over a month after those of the Virginia Creeper have fallen.
In the garden there are some autumn flowers from the Asters, or Michaelmas daisies. Our favourite is Aster lateriflorus ‘Horizontalis’, it is covered with tiny pale purple flowers for weeks on end, and is so bushy it looks like a shrub in full bloom.
Evergreen foliage shrubs and climbers are planted throughout the gardens, ensuring that there is always something of interest to see.
