May in the Garden

With warmer temperatures and longer days the garden becomes alive with fresh foliage and flowers. Here at Lakeside many established favourites such as Azaleas and Rhododendrons burst into flower. All herbaceous plants are well into growth now with some ready to start flowering, Alliums and Camassia and other late spring bulbs flower now amongst late season herbaceous plants.

The Lilacs are star performers in May and we grow several traditional varieties, All are richly scented, and we use them in floral arrangements in the hotel. One variety that is quite unusual is called ʻSensationʼ and has a white edge to each of its individual purple flowers. The best performer though is Syringa microphylla ʻSuperbaʼ which has smaller flowers that are produced from now until Late summer, and of course that heady fragrance too.
