January in the Garden

We may have had a cold start to the year but the plants are already starting to grow, Daffodils and other spring bulbs are already pushing up through the soil. Snowdrops will be in flower by the end of the month along with crocus. The star of the garden in January is Sarcoccoca, a bushy evergreen shrub commonly called 'Christmas Box'. On milder days the garden is filled with the amazing scent of it's small spidery flowers, and it also produces a scattering of berries which are red or black, depending on the variety.

At this time of year there is still a lot to do in the garden, we are constantly reviewing and redesigning our plantings, so now we are dividing and replanting herbaceous perennials, transplanting shrubs, and as always sourcing and planting more interesting new varieties.
