From Spring Blooms to Summer Glow: Watching the Lake District Change
May is one of the most beautiful times to visit the Lake District, as spring gently gives way to early summer. At Lakeside, on the shores of Lake Windermere, the landscape comes alive with colour, longer evenings, and a fresh, vibrant energy that makes this time of year so special.
The gardens are bursting into bloom, baby lambs are out in the surrounding fields, and birdsong fills the air. From golden light stretching across the lake to longer, softer evenings, it’s a season made for slowing down, stepping outside, and soaking it all in.
With two bank holidays to enjoy, now is the perfect time to plan a spring escape.
What May Feels Like in the Lake District
There’s a real sense of life returning to the landscape in May. Across the Lake District, gardens are thriving, wildlife is more active, and the surrounding fells and woodland feel full of energy again.
Here at Lakeside, our gardens are at their very best, a reflection of months of care from our Head Gardener, Kevin. Wander through the grounds, take in the views from the Spa Garden, or simply pause and enjoy the moment.
For those wanting to explore further, Kevin hosts guided garden tours every Wednesday at 10:15am , a lovely way to experience the grounds through a different lens.

Your Perfect 3-Day Lake District Escape
Whether you’re staying for a long weekend or a midweek reset, here’s how to experience the very best of Lakeside in May.
Day 1 – Arrive, Unwind & Ease Into Lakeside
Arrive to the calm of Lake Windermere and settle straight into a slower pace.
Spend your afternoon unwinding in the spa , moving between the pool, sauna, steam room and spa garden, with views stretching out over the lake.
For something extra indulgent, a facial or ELEMIS treatment is the perfect way to start your stay.
As the day softens into evening, make your way to the terrace. The Bluebird bar is back for the season, bringing a relaxed, sociable feel to lakeside evenings. Order a spritz, sit back, and watch the golden light settle across the water.
If you’re feeling peckish, opt for early dining and enjoy a little extra , whether that’s a complimentary bottle of wine or a relaxed, family-friendly meal.
End the evening slowly , this is what Lakeside does best.

Day 2 – The Classic Lakeside Experience
Wake up to breakfast overlooking the lake, with the day stretching ahead of you.
Late morning, take time to explore the grounds the gardens are in full bloom, and it’s the perfect moment for a gentle wander or even one of Kevin’s guided tours.
Then, adventure is right on your doorstep. Just a stone’s throw from Lakeside, you’ll find ancient woodland, peaceful tarns, and scenic routes along the West Windermere Way. Wander through the quiet trails of Great Knott Wood and continue on to High Dam, a hidden tarn set high above the lake, offering still waters, open views, and a true sense of escape.
Return just in time for golden hour. Pick up a Grandpa Greene’s ice cream, find a spot on the terrace, and soak up the atmosphere as the evening rolls in.
Another spritz at Bluebird? It would be rude not to.

Day 3 – Explore, Experience & Take to the Water
For your final day, embrace a little adventure.
Spend the morning exploring some of the Lake District’s most characterful towns. Just across the water, Bowness-on-Windermere offers a vibrant lakeside atmosphere, perfect for browsing independent shops or enjoying a coffee by the shore.
You can travel there as part of your journey with Windermere Lake Cruises, gliding across Lake Windermere and taking in the surrounding fells from a completely different perspective.
A little further north, Ambleside and Grasmere offer a picturesque charm, with scenic walks, traditional cafés and classic Lakeland views
For something truly memorable, return to the lake with one of our private boat experiences. With your own skipper, you’ll glide across Lake Windermere, taking in hidden corners and panoramic views. Add a glass of champagne on board or pair it with Afternoon Tea back at the hotel for a perfect send-off.
Return to Lakeside for a final moment , perhaps a quiet drink on the terrace or a wander through the gardens , before heading home feeling completely reset.
